Signs in the quote
- A firm price given over the phone without any questions about volume or access.
- No mention of minimum hours, travel time or call-out fees, followed by "it depends" when you ask.
- An unusually low hourly rate paired with a long minimum or a vague "per truck" charge.
- Extra charges for stairs, packing materials or reassembly that only appear in the terms, not the quote.
Signs in the business
- No certificate of currency, or reluctance to send one before the move.
- An ABN that does not match the trading name, or a registration only weeks old with a large review count.
- A request for a large deposit in cash or by direct transfer to a personal account.
- No physical contact details beyond a mobile number and a web form.
What a reasonable deposit looks like
Some removalists take a modest deposit to hold a busy date, particularly at month end. That is normal. What matters is that it is documented, paid to the business rather than an individual, and clearly credited against the final invoice.
Questions and answers
Can a removalist change the price on the day?
If the quote is hourly, the total depends on time taken, which is why the rate, the minimum and the estimate of hours should all be written down. If the inventory or access changes from what was quoted, the job may genuinely take longer. A quote that locks the hourly rate in writing removes the most common surprise.
